How to steam vegetables
1. Wash, peel and cut the vegetables. Place aside.
2. Using a large sauce pan or pot fill the pot about 1/4-1/3 full with water. Bring to a boil.
3. Add the vegetables by placing them in a stainless steel steaming basket, or stainless steel colander over the boiling water, again, making sure the vegetables are not immersed (that would be boiling or poaching).

If using a steaming basket, unfold.

Place your choice of vegetables you would like to steam in the colander or steam basket.

4. Let the vegetables steam until they are cooked. The cooking time depends on a few things. Most vegetables take a least 3 to 5 minutes to be done.
Dense vegetables, like carrots and rutabaga will take longer.
How long they cook, depends on your preference. If you like your vegetables a little crisp, it won't take that long. If you like them very soft they will take longer.
5. Keep an eye on the water level. Add hot water if the water to the pan gets too low.
